Keylong is a popular tourist destination which is the stopover for bikers and adventurous lovers. This beautiful destination situated from Manali to Leh Ladakh road. Keylong is situated around 120 km from Manali with at an elevation of 3080 mts above the sea level. It is administrative center of the Lahul and Spiti district. This is a wonder destination for those who take part in the adventurous activities like trekking, biking etc. Keylong is situated on the main road of Leh over the Rohtang. Keylong is surrounding by majestic hills, water streams, willow trees and snow capped mountain peaks. You will enjoy the white and brown mountains in the region and it is one of the most populated places in Lahaul Region. Keylong is the only place in Lahaul which has a regular market present.
Keylong lies on the bank of Bhaga River where you will see the intersect of the three amazing valleys like Chandra, Bhaga and Chenab. The most beautiful nature beauty, charming valley, rivers, mountains, and green landscape etc enhance the keylong beauty and make it most picturesque destination. The various Plcaes, Monasteries, Temples and big Bazzar are situated and most visited place in Keylong. Keylong following the Buddhist culture and rules and the every festivals are celebrated with Lama and Monks. In the month of July the Annual fair ‘Lahaul Festival’ is celebrated among the Buddhist and locals. During the festivals various activities are organized and lots of tourists attracts. The destination is accessible during May to till October but the Rohtang Pass is closed due to Heavy Snowfal.
There are lots of shopping options are found here like Carpet, shawl, caps, oil, woolen jackets, footwear, bamboo product etc are buying. But there are no more options of accommodations only tourist bungalow, some hotels and Govt. rest houses are available. You will enjoy the only Tibetan foods all around the keylong.
Summer: The best time to visit Keylong is summer season which fall from May to October. During this period the weather is pleasant and cool and light woolen clothes are required. The temperature varies around 20 degree to 35 degree.
Winter: Winters are chilly and cold and the temperature is fall down as zero level. November to April is winter season here. Heavy woolen clothes are required during winters.
Monsoon: The place doesn’t have more rainfall during Monsoon and the temperature is normal. This season attract the tourists due to its pleasant weather.
Kardhang Monastery: Kardhang is one of the most important Monasteries which spread the Buddhism in Lahaul. It is situated at a distance of 8 km from Keylong. The monastery has a library that houses of the Buddhist texts and weapons in 12th and 13th century. A magnificent statue of Avalokitesvara is situated here with quite and pleasant atmosphere.
Shashur Monastery: Shashur Monastery is a quiet and surrounding by the pretty blue pine trees which is located at a height of 600 mts. The Monastery is popularly known for its wonderful architecture. The walls of the monastery are decorated with picturesque painting of 84 Siddhas of Buddhism and also see the Thangka Paintings. June to July is the best time to visit Shashur when the annual fair is organized.
Suraj Tall: Suraj Lake is one of the most fascinating lakes of Himachal. The Lake is quite and calm situated at a height of 4960 mts above the sea level. It is believed that the take a dip in the water clean all yours sins.
Pin Valley National Park: This National park is a wonderful nature retreat which is constructed to conserve the endangered flora and fauna. The most famous snow leopard, blue sheep and Himalayan Vegetation is spot here. There are many safari and guide tours are available here to take the sanctuary. The best time to visit is August with the chilly weather.
Gondala: Gondala is a most beautiful location situated around 18 km from Keylong which is lies on the bank of Chandra River. The location has royal houses which are more impressive. In the month of June the fair take place when Lamas dance and sing.
Tayul Monastery: This monastery is one of the oldest and most beautiful monasteries situated at a distance of 6 km from Keylong. Tayul Monastery has a big statue of Guru Padmasambhava and a huge library.
Darchu: Darchu is a camping ground for trekkers situated at an elevation of 3360 mts.
Baralacha La: Baralacha La is a Pass road from Ladakh, Spiti and Lahaul cross the summit. This Pass is the originate point of River Chandra, Bhaga and Yamuna.
Trilokinath Temple: Trilokinath temple is revered by Both Hindu and Buddhists which is situated at a distance of 53 km from keylong. The deity is considered as Lord Shiva by Hinhus and as Lord Avalokiteshwara by the Budhist.
Rohtang Pass: Rohtang pass is lies on the way to Manali to Keylong which is inaccessible passes in winter. This Pass is one of the oldest routes and created lot of hardships for people who tried to cross it. The name of the place was “pile of corpse” since the people had tried to cross this pass when it was inaccessible.
Lahaul and Spiti Tribal Museum: This museum is situated at the south end of the town and you will visit this monastery from 10 am to 5 pm and close to Monday.
Baralacha and Kunzum: This is a world’s highest motorable passes.
By Air: The nearest Airport is Bhunter situated at a distance of 175 km from Keylong. Outside the Airport Taxies and Buses are easily available.
By Train: Jogindernagar Railway station is the nearest Railhead which is situated around 250 km from Keylong. Buses and Taxies are easily available to reach Keylong from Railhead.
By Road: Keylong is well connected to the major destination of Himachal and others like Manali is 115 km from Manali, 188 km from Kaza, 435 km from Chandigarh and 690 km from Delhi.
